– Newbie Marketer Series – Lesson 1 –
Hey there everybody. I’ve gotten a lot of requests lately to go back and do a training series for newbies. Sometimes I think we forget that there are many people entering Internet marketing on a daily basis, and what they need is some early advice to get off on the best possible foot. So this is what I’m doing, starting with the post that you’re about to read below. Today’s content is really just a very general definition of what it’s all about, and I’ll begin to move into some specifics over the next few posts. If you have any questions, or can think of any areas that you would specifically like to see covered, just reply to this post and I’ll take care of it.
What Is Internet Marketing?
Internet marketing is now called so many other names – e-marketing, web marketing, i-marketing, digital marketing, online marketing and the like. However, in plain and simple language, it can be defined as the marketing of one’s products or services through the use of the internet.
Why is Internet Marketing a big advantage to many businesses?
The worldwide web has given us many unique and newly-essential benefits, but key to marketers is that the internet has provided a global portal in which goods and services can be bought and sold by almost anyone and in any part of the world.
With internet marketing, all types of businesses have enjoyed the lower costs of information dissemination and advertisements and the technology has further tied together all the aspects of creativity, advertisement, sales and product development.
With its inexpensive cost structure, internet marketing has also enabled businesses to save on the means of reaching almost any target market or audience. At a fraction of the cost of traditional advertising, businesses can allow their customers to complete research and purchase products in the most convenient way.
And since almost all aspects of this marketing medium can be measured, tested and traced through the use of ad servers, sellers can easily use their data to determine which ads reap the most customer views or purchases.
Now, as a beginner in the world of internet marketing, you will be responsible for bringing in potential clients by providing them with goods or services. You’ll enjoy a worldwide platform for your wares, free to provide software or information products that you create yourself or even to promote things that someone else made but you are passionate about.
While there are great benefits from Internet Marketing, it does come with its own share of risks and investments. You must understand that this business is really not about raking in a lot of cash quickly. Long-term success happens with your time, diligence, persistence and passion for learning.
Therefore, most of the get rich crowd leaves disappointed. While there are many millionaires, there are very few overnight millionaires.
Let’s talk about upfront costs. While they are far less extreme than those associated with opening a physical business location, some dollars simply must be set aside to purchase the basics. There are practical expenses for things like buying your domain name, having your website hosting, etc. And those of you who expect to develop a mailing list of customers will have to invest in what’s known as an autoresponder. These online services keep track of that list and, more importantly, make sure your communication with customers follows the very strict guidelines spelled out in CAN SPAM regulation.
You will find other tools to be necessary as well, but very few of them are required on the day you begin business. In fact, become involved with marketing oriented-groups on social media platforms such as Facebook. Other successful online entrepreneurs are often very willing to freely share advice and lessons learned with you.
So, back to what internet marketing means. That serves as a practical definition at this point. Over the next few lessons, I’ll do my best to teach you about some of the topics within Internet Marketing that can enable you to generate a good living. Those will include affiliate marketing, e-mail marketing, and various forms of advertising.
